I caught up with Perriard after the press conference to get my hands on the new watch and listen to his demonstration.

Once I got my hands on it, the H1 was pretty much what I expected it to be, which is good. A bold, futuristic design that's large on the wrist, but still wearable. The case is 48.8mm wide and 17.8mm thick. The lugs are dropped, so it's a good fit for most wrists. You'll notice the two bellows in the movement and the ring of luminous green liquid used to indicate the hours. The conceptual execution seems flawless, especially as you adjust the hours forward or backward, with the green goo moving quickly around the scale. It basically uses pressure, but as far as I know, nothing like this has ever been done with a crown - maybe not yet on such a small scale.

The buying replica watch we're reviewing is made of titanium with a black DLC coating. There's an uncoated titanium version, as well as a full 18k rose gold and a 18k rose gold mixed with black.

As I said, Perriard likes to make high-end toys. The H1 feels exactly like that. It feels like something a smart kid would dream up. It's also something a grown kid would be happy to wear. It takes a lot of technical expertise to fully understand what the movement does, but almost anyone can enjoy the workings of the concept. I think Perriard understands this concept best – if you're going to have a successful new watch brand that sells high-priced items, it needs to be something that wows the average person.

The dial has a retrograde fluid indicator for the hours, and a subdial for the minutes – both are easy to read. There's a subsidiary seconds subdial and a practical power reserve indicator for the manual-winding movement. Perriard flips to the back of the watch and explains how he wanted the movement to be finished and decorated in a relatively classic way – not wanting to alienate the core consumer watch enthusiast. I, and others, love the style and balance of the H1, as well as the technical innovation. Perriard promises more and more complications in the future, so I expect the H1 to be their entry-level model for the next few years. Usually a brand like this starts with a super-high flagship model, but for HYT, getting the technology right is probably the most important start.
