Not only is it more affordable ($8,400) and more accessible than many stainless steel sports-chic competitors, but its angular design also makes it stand out in the looks department. So, by expanding the DEFY Skyline sub-collection to include skeletonized models, Zenith has now reimagined what a skeletonized watch can and should be.

Zenith has a somewhat checkered history. Founded in 1865 by Georges Favre-Jacot, it is one of the oldest continuously operating watchmakers. The most famous is the El Primero movement - the first fully integrated high-frequency automatic chronograph movement. During this era, the brand passed through several different owners. In 1976, the management auctioned off the metal presses and tools needed to manufacture the movements.

Happily, Zenith watchmaker Charles Vermot is in charge of the workshop where each El Primero chronograph movement is assembled, and he stashes the parts, blueprints and spare tools needed to manufacture the El Primero movement in Zenith Watchmaking plant behind the wall of an isolated storeroom.

The skeletonized dial offers insight into the inner workings of the updated El Primero 3620 SK movement. Additionally, the Skyline Skeleton dial features a continuously running 1/10th of a second counter at 6 o'clock, which jumps steadily in fixed increments, completing a lap every 10 seconds. This is a unique feature of this next-generation automatic high-frequency movement.

Every aspect of the watch feels like it's telling a cohesive story. First, the symmetrical display takes the shape of a four-pointed star (which itself was the hat-tip of Zenith’s “double Z” logo in the 1960s). Then, the baton hour markers on the chapter ring, as well as the central hour and minute hands, are filled with Super-LumiNova for easy legibility – something skeletonized watches often sacrifice. Finally, the architectural shape of the skeletonized dial is integrated into the angular 41 mm case.
