Carson, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Two of the bottom three teams in the Western Conference will meet up at the StubHub Center on Saturday when the Colorado Rapids tangle with Chivas USA. Both teams have endured a difficult past few months that have dropped them out of playoff contention, but both will be hoping to end the season on a positive note, starting with Saturdays match. The Rapids bring an 11-game winless streak into the fixture, having taken just two points during that time, while being outscored 18-5 in their last five contests. Colorados latest setback came in a 4-1 home defeat to Seattle Sounders FC last weekend as the Rapids fell behind 3-0 in the opening 33 minutes before pulling a goal back through Deshorn Brown shortly before halftime. But Obafemi Martins scored his second goal of the game in the 70th minute to put the match away for Seattle, leaving head coach Pablo Mastroeni to offer a rather frank evaluation of his teams performance. I think they out-competed us today and thats one thing weve done really well this year - being able to compete, Mastroeni said after the defeat. Theyve got some class players that can make a big difference on that team but the first 15 minutes of the game we didnt set the kind of tone that we needed to set to play against these kind of teams and really make it difficult for them. We were just chasing the game from the beginning. Part of the problem, according to Mastroeni, is the fact that there simply isnt much confidence in the side right now, something the boss has tried to improve by focusing on the positive aspects of his teams play. You cant deny human nature. These guys arent playing with the most confidence - how can you when you havent won a game in two months, Mastroeni said bluntly. It makes it that much more difficult. My job the past two months has been to be very upbeat, really positive and focus on the good things that were doing. Unfortunately for Mastroeni, there hasnt been too much to be positive about, although Saturdays match will likely be the best chance Colorado has at grabbing a win over the final three games. After all, the Rapids last win came against Chivas on July 25. The Goats know a thing or two about lengthy slumps, with Chivas bringing an end to a 12-game winless streak last weekend by upsetting Real Salt Lake, 1-0. Head coach Wilmer Cabrera spoke before the RSL match about closing the season strong, with three of the final four games coming at home. And now that Chivas managed to win the first of those games, Cabrera will be hoping to put together another strong performance at home against the Rapids. I told the guys we needed to improve [defensively], and that the chances would come, said Cabrera after the victory against RSL. If we could find the balance between being more solid in the back and creating chances, we were going to be alright. It was tough, it wasnt easy, and to win 1-0 shows how hard of a game it was. It also proved how all the players worked hard defensively and then offensively when we won the ball. All Cabrera can ask for at this stage of the season is for his side to put out a similar effort to the one he saw last weekend, and Chivas will have a good opportunity to collect back-to-back wins for the first time since early July. One thing that will make life a bit tougher for Chivas is the fact that leading scorer Erick Torres will be away on international duty with Mexico. Terry Porter Blazers Jersey .ca. Off-Season Game Plan looks at what the Blue Jackets may do to build upon last seasons success to return to the playoffs again next year. The red-hot Los Angeles Kings will aim for a seventh straight victory and a 3-0 lead in their second round Western Conference series when they host the Anaheim Ducks in Thursdays Game 3 battle at Staples Center. Watch the Ducks vs. Kings live on TSN tonight at 9:30pm et/6:30pm pt. The Kings, of course, were down 3-0 in the opening round against San Jose before becoming only the fourth team in NHL history to win a best-of-seven series after losing the first three meetings. L.A. hasnt slowed down a bit since completing that first-round comeback with a Game 7 win in San Jose, claiming the first two games of this series on the road. The Kings posted a 3-2 overtime win in Anaheim on Saturday before grabbing a 2-0 series lead with Mondays 3-1 triumph at the Honda Center. The Kings have gone on a few long playoff winning streaks in recent years. The club won eight straight at one point in 2012 en route to winning the franchises first Stanley Cup title and had a six-game winning streak last spring before falling in the conference finals to Chicago. "We just take it one game at a time, shift at a time, period at a time. All those things like that," said head coach Darryl Sutter of his teams current winning streak. Anaheim, meanwhile, hopes it can halt L.A.s hot streak on Thursday and avoid falling behind 3-0. A seventh straight win by the Kings would give them a chance to close the series with a sweep Saturday at the Staples Center. The top-seeded Ducks finished 16 points ahead of Los Angeles in the Pacific Division standings and went 4-0-1 against the Kings during the regular-season series, but so far that success hasnt translated to the playoffs. "We know we can beat this team," said Ducks defenseman Ben Lovejoy. "We feel weve had pretty even games, and theyve come out on top. I truly believe the playoffs are all about momentum. Right now, we need to put a seed of doubt in their mind. If we win (Game 3), its a 2-1 series and we have momentum. We can do that." The Kings jumped on Anaheim early in Game 2, with Marian Gaborik scoring just 34 seconds into the contest. Anaheim tied it near the midway point of the first, but Alec Martinnez scored the game-winner for L.ddddddddddddA. at 12:07 of the first. The score remained 2-1 until Dwight King added an empty-netter in the closing minute of the third period. "Well enjoy this one night, but we have a lot of work to be done still," said Martinez. Jonathan Quick turned away 36 shots to anchor the win for the Kings. The 2012 Conn Smythe winner had stopped 69-of-72 shots sent his way in this series for a save percentage of .958. Gaborik also is having a strong series for L.A., recording three goals and an assist over the first two games to give him nine points (6 goals, 3 assists) in nine games this postseason. The Slovakian sniper was the hero of Game 1, tying it late in regulation before scoring the winner 12:07 into overtime. Anze Kopitar has been on fire for the Kings as well, notching at least one point in all nine of the clubs postseason games this spring. The star centerman had an assist on Monday and leads all skaters in the playoffs with 14 points (4g, 10a). Kopitar has reached the scoresheet in all nine games this postseason. Patrick Maroon scored the only goal of Game 2 for the Ducks, who had won all three of their home games in a 4-2 series win over Dallas in the opening round. Jonas Hiller gave up two goals on 16 shots in the loss. "This series isnt over. We can go to Staples Center, get a few bounces and bring this series back tied," said Anaheim head coach Bruce Boudreau. The Ducks were 3-0 on the road against the Kings during the regular season, but one of those wins came outdoors at Dodger Stadium on Jan. 25. Thursdays battle will mark the first postseason game between the clubs at the Staples Center, as this series marks the first playoff encounter between L.A. and Anaheim. The Kings played Monday without defensemen Willie Mitchell and Robyn Regehr in the lineup and both players could be out again with undisclosed injuries. Mitchell last played in Game 6 against San Jose, while Regehr has been out since leaving in the first period of Game 1 against Anaheim. Matt Greene has filled in for Mitchell in the lineup, while Jeff Schultz replaced Regehr on Monday. ' ' ' a touchdown pass and Blair Walsh kicked a pair of field goals as the Minnesota Vikings closed out the season with a 13-9 victory over the Chicago Bears. Bridgewater was 17- of-25 for 209 yards with an interception for the Vikings (7-9), who snapped a two-game losing streak. Matt Asiata carried the ball 19 times for 91 yards. Jay Cutler, back under center after being benched for last weeks game, was 23-of-36 for 172 yards for the Bears (5-11), who dropped their final five games of the season to finish last in the NFC North. After missing the playoffs for a seventh time in the past eight years, Chicago might be looking to clean house as head coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery are on the hot seat. Final Score: NY Jets 37, Miami 24 Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - If the Jets had played this well all season, Rex Ryans job security would never have been an issue. Geno Smith threw for a career-high 358 yards with three touchdowns, including a 74-yard scoring strike to Eric Decker that ignited a run of 23 unanswered points, as New York concluded a dismal year with a 37-24 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at Sun Life Stadium. Decker caught 10 passes for 221 yards for the Jets (4-12), who hadnt scored more than 25 points in a game all year and gave Ryan a victory in what could be his final game as New Yorks head coach after six seasons. Ryan compiled a record of 46-50 and is expected to soon learn his fate, although indications are that he, and possibly general manager John Idzik, will be fired. Ryan took the Jets to the AFC Championship Game after each of his first two seasons, but New York hasnt had a winning record since and this years finish was the worst for the franchise since a 4-12 mark in 2007. Miami coach Joe Philbin is set to return next year after owner Stephen Ross made the announcement following last Sundays victory over Minnesota. The Dolphins (8-Cool finished Philbins third year with a second straight .500 campaign. Miami was 7-9 in Philbins first season and 8-8 last year, when a loss to the Jets on the final day of the season cost the Dolphins a playoff spot. ' ' '
